Del Norte Redwoods State Park was established in 1927 and approximately 50% of the redwood trees are old growth coastal redwoods.  Del Norte Redwoods State Park was named one of the Top 100 Family Campgrounds in the United States, according to a survey conducted by ReserveAmerica.

The park is open from May to September.

Campers Max Length 31 feet; trailer 27 feet.

The vegetation in the area includes tanoak, madrone, red alder, big leaf maple, and California bay, but predominantly red alder, which eventually will bring fir and seond growth redwood trees. There is a wide variety of dense groundcover in the area.

There is some fairly steep areas in the park, with elevations rising up to 1277 above sea level. The Pacific Ocean is adjacent to the park with steep cliffs making it generally inaccessible except for Damnation Trail and Footsteps Rock Trail. There is a 1/2 mile of sandy beach nearby for taking walks and tide pool viewing at low tide. However, swimming is not safe due to the rough tide and rocky conditions.
